Sam, 11, is on a week-long vacation with his parents and older brother on a small Dutch island. Obsessed with death, the boy decides to practice being alone, in case everyone he cares about dies before him. However, his plans are interrupted when he meets a peculiar 12-year-old girl named Tess. She lives with her single doctor mother, but she has a plan to find her birth father, and decides Sam should help her. In doing so, he discovers how important family really is.
