Kendra Ellis-Connor’s (Kerry Washington) 18-year-old son Jamal has gone missing. He went out earlier in the evening and has yet to return. Kendra turns to the police, hoping they can help locate him. When rookie officer Paul Larkin (Jeremy Jordan) interviews Kendra about Jamal, his questions, including whether he has a street name, any priors or gold teeth, seem more racist than helpful. Larkin tells Kendra there has been “an incident” but refuses to disclose any more information until the lieutenant arrives. Kendra’s estranged husband Scott Connor (Steven Pasquale), who is Jamal’s father, arrives at the station, tensions rise as they try to piece together what has happened to Jamal. Based on the acclaimed Broadway play of the same name.
